Copyright policy and DMCA notices
Starlight respects creators’ rights and expects its users to do the same. We respond to clear notices of alleged copyright infringement and, where appropriate, disable access to the content and end the accounts of repeat infringers.
How Starlight is designed
- Takes are posted as vocal-only audio. The backing track a user sang over is not uploaded.
- Creator packs are timing-only by default (when each line starts), without lyric text or audio. Packs that include either need a rights declaration and a moderator’s approval first.
- Uploaded audio is checked against an audio fingerprint list of content previously removed for infringement.
Reporting infringement
The fastest way is the Report button on the take or pack in the app. You can also send a notice below or to our designated copyright agent. To find a take’s ID, open it in the app and use Share to copy its link; the ID is the long code at the end.
A valid notice includes:
- Your name and contact details, and a physical or electronic signature.
- Identification of the copyrighted work you say was infringed.
- Identification of the material on Starlight (its link or ID) so we can find it.
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent or the law.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for them.
What happens next
- The reported content is disabled right away while a moderator reviews your notice.
- If the notice is upheld, the content stays removed, the user receives a copyright strike, and the audio is added to our block list. Three active strikes lead to suspension.
- The user can send a counter-notice by email. If we receive a valid counter-notice, we may restore the content unless the complainant tells us they have started legal action.
- If the notice is rejected, the content is restored.

If your content was removed
You’ll get a notification in the app. If you believe it was a mistake, send a counter-notice by email to [email protected] with your name, contact details, a description of the content and where it appeared, and a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe it was removed by mistake, along with your consent to the jurisdiction of your local federal court.
